Fall Bulbs FAQ's

Fall bulbs have arrived at the Mustard Seed Market! These bulbs are meant to be planted at the end of fall, beginning of winter for beautiful spring blooms. We sat down with Co-Founder, Danielle Stewart, to learn about best practices for planting bulbs. Here's what you need to know.

When is the best time to plant?

Plant in October, November, even into December. If you are off the mountain, stick to November or December to make sure conditions are right before planting. Tulips like to be planted the latest, they do not like warm or wet soil. Frost does not affect these bulbs.

Can you plant these bulbs in containers?

Either is fine! There's a fun trend of layering bulbs in containers called 'lasagna gardening.' We do this often when designing winter containers so customers will have an early spring burst of color. The concept is to add 3 or 4 different layers in a pot, with the latest blooming bulbs on the bottom and the first bloomers on the top. For a cute Autumn container, you can top dress now with pansies, ornamental cabbages, and evergreens.

When do these bulbs bloom?

We have increased our varieties this year to ensure we have bulbs that bloom from early spring into summer! Each bulb has the bloom time on the box or tag for reference.

We are constantly asked for the big purple blooms in Blowing Rock Park. These are Alliums and now is the time to buy them and get them in the ground for next summer's blooms. These are also deer-resistant perennial bulbs, meaning they will come back year after year and the deer normally leave them alone. -Danielle Stewart
